Best Day Trips from Fez (Fes), Morocco
Fez is the cultural heart of northern Morocco, but some of the region's best experiences lie within a two-hour radius of the city: Roman ruins, alpine mountain towns, cedar forests full of monkeys, and cave-house villages most visitors never hear about.
All the destinations below can be done as a day trip from Fez — or from Dar Zaytoun in Bhalil, a village guesthouse 30 minutes south of the city that many travelers use as a quieter base for exploring the region.
Bhalil & Sefrou — 28–30 km (30–45 min)
The closest and most underrated trip: Bhalil's centuries-old inhabited cave houses and painted lanes, followed by Sefrou's riverside medina, mellah, and waterfalls. In June, the UNESCO-listed Sefrou Cherry Festival adds parades and the crowning of the Cherry Queen. Half a day is enough, though the area rewards an overnight stay.
Ifrane — 55 km (about 80 min)
Nicknamed 'Little Switzerland', Ifrane is a 1930s alpine-style hill station at 1,665 m altitude, with red-roofed chalets, clean boulevards, and one of Africa's top universities. In winter it gets real snow and nearby Michlifen offers skiing; in summer it is a cool escape from the heat of Fez.
Azrou & the Cedar Forest — 60 km (about 90 min)
Just beyond Ifrane, the Middle Atlas cedar forest around Azrou is home to Barbary macaques that are easy to spot along the forest roads. Combine the monkeys with a walk among the giant cedars and a stop in Azrou's Amazigh carpet cooperatives. Ifrane and Azrou pair naturally into one full-day loop.
Meknes — 70 km (about 95 min)
Morocco's often-skipped imperial city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Highlights include the monumental Bab Mansour gate, the vast royal granaries and stables of Heri es-Souani, and a far more relaxed medina than Fez. Easily combined with Volubilis and Moulay Idriss in a single day.
Volubilis & Moulay Idriss — 88–95 km (about 2 h)
Volubilis is the best-preserved Roman site in Morocco — a UNESCO-listed ancient city of triumphal arches and remarkably intact floor mosaics, set among wheat fields. Ten minutes away, the whitewashed pilgrimage town of Moulay Idriss cascades over two hills and is considered one of Morocco's holiest places. Go early or late in the day: the ruins have almost no shade.
